SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Norwegian metals producer Hydro announced that it continues to explore new ways to use obsolete aluminum scrap. The company aims at using up to 10% obsolete scrap at its primary smelters in that country. Hydro has selected Hoyanger smelter as a pilot location for the project.
According to Ola Sæter, head of primary production at Hydro, the successful implementation of the pilot project will see application of it across all of its Nowegian smelters. The move is considered part of the company’s ongoing efforts to offer new and improved sustainability solutions.

Currently, the company’s aluminum production in Norway is based on renewable hydro power, whose average carbon dioxide emissions are currently 25% of the global average. The introduction of post-consumer scrap in the primary aluminum production process would lead to further improvement of its climate performance, Hydro press release said.
Hydro operates five plants in Norway that produces primary aluminium based on renewable power. By using recycled aluminium, the company intends to drastically reduce its energy use in the production phase.
It must be noted that the company already produces Hydro CIRCAL brand of products made with a minimum of 75% recycled, post-consumer aluminium scrap.
