Henkel Egypt, Plastic Bank Join Hands to Fight Plastic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): FMCG major Henkel Egypt announced that it has tied up with social enterprise Plastic Bank to fight rising plastic pollution. The partnership announced opening of three three plastic waste collection centres in Mansheyet Nasser in the capital city of Cairo.

The collection centres are being set up with twin objectives. The first is obviously to prevent plastic waste from entering the rivers and oceans by ensuring proper collection and recycling. Apart from addressing the environmental challenges posed by plastic waste, the initiative also intends to improve the living condition of local waste collectors, by offering premiums for the materials they collect. Incidentally, the plastic waste collection centres are expected to generate over 1,000 jobs over the next two years.

The partnership aims to establish a supply chain that will initially collect around 3,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. Over the next two years, the partnership aims to achieve a collection target of 5,000 tonnes. The collected plastics will be transported to recycling facilities and reintegrated into products to form a closed-loop.

The project will deliver significant environmental benefits, foreign currency and job opportunities, noted Ahmed Fahmy, VP Africa & Marketing MEA & President, Henkel Egypt.
