Global Scrap Metal Trade Reported Diverse Trend

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The scrap metal trade by world countries exhibited mixed trend in the month of July this year.

The data published by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers’ Association (TCUD) indicates that Turkish scrap imports surged higher by 24.35% year-on-year to total 2.36 million tons in the month of July this year. The cumulative imports too were up by over 11% over the previous year to total around 12.1 million tons.

According to Japanese Ministry of Finance (MoF) data, the Japanese scrap imports recorded year-on-year decline by 26.1%, totalling around 4,000 tons. The primary supplier was South Korea, which supplied almost 1,900 tons.

The Vietnamese government statistics indicate surge in scrap imports during July 2020, primarily boosted by increased crude steel output by the country. The imports, at 480,000 tons, were up by 4% from the same month a year before. The country’s scrap imports from the U.S. recorded year-on-year surge by 83%.

The South Korean scrap imports in July totalled around 310,000 tons, down by 44% from the previous year. The largest supplier was Japan with 200,000 tons, followed by Russia with 49,000 tons.

Meantime, Brazilian Ministry of Economy data suggests marginal rise in scrap exports by the country during the month. The Brazilian exports were up by 1.8% to total 76,000 tons. The largest export destination was Bangladesh.
