SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Georgia-Pacific announced its decision to invest over $145 million towards expansion and modernization of its Darlington, South Carolina, Dixie plant. The proposed investment, which will expand the plate and bowl making operations at the plant, is further to increasing consumer demand for these products.
The expansion works are expected to begin in March this year. The company targets to complete the works by Q1 2022. It will add new machinery to the plant, including a new plate printing press. Georgia-Pacific will build a new modern warehouse facility, as part of the expansion. The company noted that the investment is unlikely to create new jobs.
The plate plant will continue its operations during the expansion phase. Meantime, the Darlington cup plant will be shut down by September this year. The cup customers will be served by Georgia-Pacific’s other plants located in Lexington, Kentucky and Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.
David Duncan, executive vice president for Georgia-Pacific’s Consumer Products Group stated that the Dixie brand’s unique combination of convenience and performance has resulted in continuous growth in demand for plates and bowls. The proposed investment by the company is an investment in its customers and consumers who use its products, Duncan added.
