E-Scrap Company Ordered to Pay Penalty and Hold Free Collection

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Richmond, VA-based AERC Recycling Solutions has been ordered by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) authorities to pay a fine of $10,000 and hold free collection event. This is in settlement of non-compliance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RERA), which involved illegal storage of waste lamps at AERC’s Richmond, Va facility.

The EPA inspections had revealed that the company dealt with materials that were not covered by its permits. It also cited improper labelling of materials and improper storage of materials at site. AERC had failed to keep containers storing waste lamps closed and contain release of waste lamps.

In settlement, the company has been ordered to pay civil penalty of $10,000. In addition, AERC has to conduct electronics recycling event or events in coordination with the City within 90 days from the effective date of agreement. The cost of publicizing and hosting the event shall be no less than $40,000. The event shall collect household electronics from public at no cost.

Meantime, AERC has neither admitted nor denied the allegation and has agreed not to contest the penalties imposed on it.
