DS Smith to Build State-of-the-Art CHP Plant at Kemsley Paper Mill in Kent

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith announced that it has received consent for constructing a new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at its Kemsley Paper Mill in Kent. The company received development consent from the Secretary of State.

According to company press release, the new CHP plant will be developed in partnership with the utilities company E.ON. It will replace the existing plant and will power the mill’s recycled paper making operations.

The new plant will be located on the south-eastern part of the mill site. It comprises of a gas turbine, Waste Heat Recovery Boilers and Steam Turbine. DS Smith expects to commission the plant by mid-2021.

Colin McIntyre, Chief Executive for DS Smith Paper and Recycling Divisions expressed delight on grant of planning consent by the government, which will allow the company to start works on the plant. The state-of the-art solution will help the company to meet its long-term energy requirements. The new improved facility is likely to result in 36,000 tonnes per year carbon reduction, he added.
