SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): European packaging major DS Smith has announced partnership with ‘Keep Scotland Beautiful’ to launch a new city-wide initiative that targets to recycle millions of coffee cups. The ‘Cup Movement’ will initially focus on Greater Glasgow area and will later expand to cities in other regions as well.
The initiative aims to increase awareness among businesses on the need to reduce coffee cup waste. Independent businesses of all shapes and sizes will be urged to become part of the initiative.
As part of the initiative, DS Smith will roll out its ‘Coffee Cup Drop Box’ recycling service, which has been successfully launched across the UK and Netherlands. The company will partner with Royal Mail Relay in collecting coffee cups from businesses. The cups this collected will be transported to the Kemsley paper mill, where they will be recycled to create new paper products.
Tom Campbell-White, European Strategic Development Director at DS Smith stated that the company is proud to support Keep Beautiful Scotland and its efforts to increase coffee cup recycling in Scotland.

As per estimates, Scotland consumed approximately 500 million single-use coffee cups, with Greater Glasgow accounting for almost one-fifth. The coffee cup recycling rate in Scotland stands at 4%.
