SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Constellium announced that its Muscle Shoals, Alabama facility has received grant funding of $23 million from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) under towards boosting its casting capacity. The funding was awarded via the Defense Production Act Investments (DPAI) Program.
The company plans to use the grant money to rebuild its Direct Chill aluminium casting center. It will install a state-of-the-art casting equipment at the site, which in turn will add up to around 300 million pounds of annual casting capacity. The added capacity will help Constellium to boost its recycled input and reduce the use of primary metal.
The additional capacity will increase the domestic supply of aluminium rolling ingot. The country has been relying on imported slab to meet the growing demand from manufacturing industries over the past few years.
Buddy Stemple, President of Constellium Muscle Shoals noted that the company is excited to partner with the DoD to help strengthen its industrial base. The investment will enable the domestic industry to meet the rapidly increasing demand for the aluminium products needed for the overall U.S. manufacturing sector, he added.
Constellium’s Muscle Shoals plant has the capacity to produce over 1 billion pounds per year of finished aluminium coils.
