SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Paris, France-based Constellium hit new milestone, by successfully completing the world’s first industrial-scale production of aluminum slab using hydrogen combustion. The milestone achievement marks a significant step forward in its journey towards decarbonisation of its industrial activities.
According to company press release, the casting was performed in a 12-ton furnace at C-TEC- the company’s primary R&D facility. The process strictly followed internal procedures and quality monitoring techniques. No quality impact due to hydrogen combustion was observed on the metal, it noted. The 12-ton hydrogen-powered aluminum slab will be further processed at its Neuf-Brisach site, to be used in electric vehicles.
Constellium has been an active partner in various joint venture projects aimed at promoting the use of hydrogen-based technologies for industrial decarbonisation. For instance, the HylnHeat initiative, funded by the EU, targets to substitute natural gas with hydrogen in aluminum and steel transformation processes.
Ludovic Piquier, Senior VP, Manufacturing Excellence and Chief Technical Officer of Constellium noted that the successful completion of the first industrial-scale hydrogen casting demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainability and its resolve to explore innovations in green technologies.
