Coca-Cola's Plastic Footprint Commitments Lack Transparency

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  Oceana Group announced that Coca-Cola’s pledge to boost refillable bottles lacks commitment. It called upon the company to release further details on how the goal will be measured.

Coca-Cola had announced a new goal to reach 25% reusable packaging by 2030, while presenting its earnings for the fourth quarter of 2021. The announcement lacked details on what the 25% target represents. In addition, the company did not disclose how the new measure would help it in reducing its reliance on single-use plastics.

In response to the company announcement, Dr. Dana Miller, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Oceana said that the company has done the right thing by prioritizing reusable and refillable packaging as its core strategy. However to measure the impact of the action, greater transparency is needed. Miller called upon the company to provide more details. Furthermore, it urged the company to roll out the strategy in every market where it operates and called upon other leading beverage companies to follow suit.

As per studies, replacing single-use PET bottles with refillable bottles could lead to significant reduction in marine plastic pollution. In fact, the best way to stop plastic bottles from polluting oceans is to replace them with refillable bottles.
