SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Soft drinks major Coca-Cola announced launch of 100% recyclable plastic bottles in the U.S. All of the 20-ounce bottles of the company sold at American retail outlets will now be made from 100% recycled plastic, the company said. This is part of the company’s ongoing attempts to switch all of its global packaging to recycled PET.
This will be applicable to all versions of Coca-Cola, including Diet Coke and Coke Zero Sugar. The company noted that all versions of Coke sols in 12-ounce bottles have already been converted into 100% recycled packaging. The changes have been brought in all one-liter bottles of its Dasani Water subsidiary.
Coca-Cola had first began using recycled PET in bottles in 2021, after which has been consistently scaling up the recycled content over the past three years.
It must be noted that Coca-Cola has long been a major contributor to world’s plastic waste. The company was ranked the world’s worst plastic polluter for six years in a arrow by Break Free from Plastic initiative. The company accounts for almost 20% of the world’s PET plastic bottle production, according to The Guardian.
Coca-Cola aims to use 50% recycled material in all new packaging by the end of the current decade. The switch towards all-rPET packaging is considered as a major step towards achieving this goal.
