SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Cascades, Inc. announced its decision to permanently close tissue manufacturing and converting activities at Ransom and Pittston plants located in Pennsylvania. The decision will be implemented progressively between December 1, 2020 and January 31, 2021.

The Ransom site has two paper machines, whose total annual production capacity is estimated at around 50,000 short tonnes of tissue paper. The tissue paper from this site is usually converted into cases of the product at the Pittston plant. These volumes will now be moved to Cascades’ other plants, said the company press release. It must be noted that the two sites together employ a total of 229 workers.

The move is part of company’s strategic plan to optimize its operational efficiency. Several factors such as aging equipment at the sites, low profitability, high logistics costs and investment in other production and converting facilities have prompted the company to go ahead with the decision. It will improve the profitability of Tissue Group operating segment, said Jean-David Tardif, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cascades Tissue Group.

The affected employees would be offered the option of relocate to its other business units. Those who are unwilling or unable to do so would be provided with all possible support in their search for a new employment.
