SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) has alerted its members on the rising number of fire incidents within the sector and has called its members to take active steps in tackling such incidents. In an open letter, the Association noted that Li-ion batteries or waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) containing batteries have been identified as the major cause for fire incidents in the metal recycling sector.
James Kelly, Chief Executive, BMRA noted that the fires pose a significant health and safety issue. These fires cause real risk to employees, contractors and visitors to the scrap metal facilities and also to those working in other metal recycling sites.
Kelly urged the member companies to take active steps to ensure that loads sold are free from li-ion batteries and WEEE containing batteries. A thorough clean-up of the entire supply chain is necessary to prevent risks of injury, death and harm to the environment, he added. The companies who fail to ensure this are liable to face hefty sanctions from the National Fire Chiefs Council and the Environment Agency.
A concerted effort by all sector stakeholders is essential to eradicate combustion sources from supply chain, BMRA said.
