SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The November/December 2024 issue of the Bureau of International Recycling's (BIR) World Mirror on Non-Ferrous Metals was released. The paper highlights persistent problems with metal supply for recycling.
Slower manufacturing activity and the entry of new mills into the market were the primary causes of the continued scarcity of aluminum with recycled content in the United States. In Australia and New Zealand, the volumes remained below average.

All around Europe, there were reports of a material shortage. Significantly less aluminum was recorded by Benelux from production, shredders, and destruction. A number of shredders in the area have been forced to run at reduced capacities due to a shortage of input material. According to the BIR research, scrap has become scarce in Germany due to the drastic drop in overall industrial output.
The primary aluminum industry in China is likely to suffer as a result of U.S. President-elect Trump's plan to levy an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports. Trade and logistics are already severely disrupted in two other countries in the region: Malaysia and Thailand. Increased customs inspections at Malaysian ports and Thai authorities' crackdown on non-compliant enterprises have had a significant impact on recycling operations.
