SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The NEDO Carbon Recycling Project by ArcelorMittal in partnership with SEKISUI CHEMICAL has reached target ahead of schedule. The project to capture and reuse carbon dioxide emitted during steelmaking process, was also supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan’s national research and development agency. Launched in 2021, it was originally scheduled to be completed by 2024.

The project was tested using blast furnace gas at the company’s Asturias, Spain plant. The testing phase delivered a carbon dioxide conversion rate of 90% and a hydrogen conversion rate of 75%. This is much higher when matched with the project target of 85% or higher conversion rate for carbon dioxide and 60% or higher for hydrogen.
As the next step, the two companies have decided to conduct test by further optimising the conditions by way of replacing the catalyst with a high-performance one. Alongside, they will also consider implementation of new projects by scaling up the technology.
The process converts the carbon dioxide captured and separated from blast furnace gas to Synthetic Gas using SEKISUI CHEMICAL’s unique chemical looping technology. The converted synthetic gas is then fed into the blast furnace as a reduction agent in replacement of coke.
