ArcelorMittal Signed  Agreement to Supply General Motors with XCarb Steel

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal North America announced that it has reached an agreement with General Motors (GM) towards supply of XCarb recycled and renewably produced steel. The supply will be from ArcelorMittal Dofasco facility in Hamilton, Ontario and is expected to commence during the current quarter.

The XCarb steel is manufactured via the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) route. The process makes use of electricity from renewable sources. It comprises of a minimum of 70% scrap and up to 90%. Moreover, it does not use carbon offsets to obtain the reduced carbon intensity.

Commenting on the agreement, Peter Leblanc, CMO Automotive at ArcelorMittal noted that it is a terrific first step in supplying steel with considerably lower carbon dioxide emissions to automobile manufacturers in North America. XCarb is one of the smartest steels. The company is proud to collaborate with GM in their journey towards a zero emissions future, he added.

Meantime, Jeff Morrison, vice president of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain at GM said that the agreement further testifies the company’s ongoing efforts to innovate with its suppliers in order to reduce emissions throughout the supply chain.
