SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal Asturias has entered into an agreement with industrial engineering company Sarralle towards construction of a new electric arc furnace (EAF) at Gijon plant in Spain. This is in line with the previously announced decarbonisation plan for the company’s Spanish steel operations. The signing ceremony was held on 23 November, 2023.
According to company press release, the civil works on the site are expected to commence early next year. The EAF is expected to become operational during the final quarter of 2025. Once operational, the site will be capable of producing wide range of low-carbon emissions steel for the long products sector. It must be noted that these products are currently manufactured using the blast furnace (BF) route.
In addition to building a new EAF, the project also comprises of installation of a de-dusting system and waste heat recovery unit by Sarralle, aimed at maximizing the energy efficiency of the new EAF.
Commenting on the development, Philippe Meyran, CEO ArcelorMittal Asturias noted that this marks an important part of the decarbonisation programme for the company’s steelmaking operations in Spain. Further, he thanked all the stakeholders for their ongoing cooperation on the project.
This is the first decarbonisation project carried out in Spain using Spanish technology.
