ArcelorMittal Launched Industrial-Scale Steel Powder Production

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal announced its entry into the additive manufacturing market as a supplier of steel powder.

According to company press release, it plans to build an industrial-scale inert gas atomiser in Aviles, Spain to produce high quality steel powders for additive manufacturing technologies such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), binder jetting (BJ) and direct energy deposition (DED).

The proposed atomiser will initially have an annual capacity of 1,000 tonnes. It will have a large batch-size production capability starting from 200 kilograms up to 3 tonnes. The plant will help the steelmaker to supply significant volumes of steel powders with consistent quality, as per specifications of the additive manufacturing industry. The powder will be produced from scrap steel using renewable energy, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation.

Commenting on the landmark achievement, Gregory Ludkovsky, Chief Executive Officer of Global Research and Development, ArcelorMittal noted that the launch of the new business unit reflects the company’s vision to be at the forefront of innovation and sustainability.
