SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading steelmaker ArcelorMittal announced partnership with Tier 1 automotive supplier Gestamp to trial the use of low-carbon emissions steel for use in car parts. Upon successful execution of the trials, the partnership will ultimately use steel in car parts in card produced in Spain and throughout Europe.
The two companies have signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation on sustainability and to ensure that ArcelorMittal’s low-carbon emissions steel meets all the technical requirements specified by Gestamp. This is the first such partnership between a steel manufacturer and an automotive stamper.
According to sources, Gestamp has successfully trialed the first parts in press-hardeneble steel using Usibor 1500 made of XCarb recycled and renewably produced steel. Also, Gestamp is the first Tier 1 supplier in the automotive sector to buy ArcelorMittal’s XCarb green steel certificates to produce automotive components.
Geert Van Poelvoorde, CEO ArcelorMittal Europe said that the partnership with Gestamp will use ultra-high strength steel to help carmakers decarbonise their supply chain. With this, the company is on the brink of supplying low-carbon emissions steel for large-scale automotive production, which in turn will result in delivering more sustainable vehicles, he added.
