ArcelorMittal Broke Ground on New EAF at Gijon Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal announced that it has started construction of an electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Gijon, Spain plant. The EAF will be built at an investment of approximately €213 million. This is considered as the first major EAF project to be implemented as part of the company’s European decarbonisation program. The first production from the EAF is expected by Q1 2026.

According to company press release, the new facility will have a production capacity of 1.1 million tonnes of semi-finished steel products per year, which will be primarily supplied to the rail and wire-rod mills at the plant.

In the initial phase, the steel production from the new EAF will result in as much as 35% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Upon completion of transition phase, the reduction in carbon emissions will be elevated further to touch nearly 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.

The ground-breaking ceremony held at the ArcelorMittal Asturias’ plant was attended by several leading authorities including Adrian Barbon, the President of the Government of the Principality of Asturias.

The installation of the state-of-the-art technology will enable the company to produce value-added rails and wire rods.
