Aqua Metals to Deploy Innovative Li-ion Recycling Technology

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Reno, Nevada-based Aqua Metals announced that it will deploy its new lithium-ion recycling process, which will be capable of recycling up to 10 metric tonnes of lithium-ion black mass per month.

Unlike other recycling processes, the proprietary Li AquaRefining process can produce high purity individual metals more efficiently. These metals can be sold immediately or be processed into battery cathode precursor materials for lithium-ion batteries. Using this technology, the company has plated high-purity cobalt and produced manganese dioxide from lithium-ion battery black mass.

According to Steve Cotton, president and CEO, Aqua Metals, the fully integrated pilot is being deployed at the Innovation Center located in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center. The operations are expected to commence in the forthcoming months. It targets to achieve 1,000 metric tons of annual production by the end of the next year upon commercialisation, thus generating significant revenues for the company.

Upon successful completion of the scaling of the process at the Sparks, Nevada facility, the company will look to commercialize the process at a smaller operation, then at a bigger operation and finally at several number of facilities.
