SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Montreal, Quebcec-based scrap metal recycling company American Iron & Metal Company Inc. (AIM) will install a “noise mitigation wall” at its scrapyard facility on Toombs Street, Moncton, New Brunswick.

Elaine Aucoin, the city's general manager of sustainable growth and development services, in a council meeting held Tuesday, announced that the city has already issued a permit for the wall. The wall comprises stacked containers and will be about 28 feet tall and 240 feet long. The intended location of the wall is between a rail spur where scrap is loaded into train cars and the street.
The business is required to have a noise mitigation plan in place by November 1, 2024, to maintain its provincial operating permit, which was extended earlier this summer. It should be noted that the facility has been facing numerous complaints about sounds and smells from nearby residents.
Coun. Shawn Crossman raised concerns over the plan, saying that the construction of the wall could only redirect the noise. He urged the city staff to hold a public meeting in the neighborhood before the end of September this year to look into the concerns.
The AIM’s Moncton facility has been under scrutiny following a fire incident at its Saint John port location.
