SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) plans to achieve new heights in recycling levels. The CMI members reiterated their commitment to ambitious recycling targets including 70% recycling rate foe aluminum beverage cans by 2030. The targets will help improve the circularity of the aluminum beverage can, thus making it the most sustainable package on the market.

The industry aims to attain 80% recycling rate for aluminum beverage cans by 2040 and more than 90% by 2050. It must be noted that the recycling rate had totalled 45% during the previous year. As per estimates, the U.S. recycles around 90,000 aluminum beverage cans every minute. Nearly 93% of the cans from recycling bins take new life. An average beverage can has industry-leading average recycled content of 7%.
Robert Budway, President, CMI said that the aluminum beverage can recycling goals are inspired by the commitment of its members to sustainable and responsible manufacturing processes. The collaborative efforts to boost recycling rates will not only benefit the industry’s growth but also strengthen the country’s economy.
A detailed roadmap on achieving the above targets will be published in early-2022, CMI press release noted.
