AISI Posted Nominal Increase in U.S. Raw Steel Output

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published the latest weekly domestic steel output data. When compared to the same week last year, the U.S. weekly raw steel output saw a slight increase of 0.9% during the week ending September 21, 2024.

Domestic raw steel output in the United States averaged 1.707 million net tons per week. The percentage of domestic mill capabilities used was 76.9%. It is important to note that production reached 1.691 million NT during the same week last year, though at a lower capacity utilization rate of 74.4%.

In contrast, weekly crude steel production fell 2.4% from the previous week. Production was 1.749 million NT during the week ending September 14, 2024, with a capability utilization rate of 78.8%.

With 742,000 net tons produced, the Southern region was the leading producer. The Great Lakes region produced 583,000 net tons during the week. The remaining regions' production (in thousand net tons) is given below: Midwest: 204; Northeast: 125; West: 53.

As of September 21, 2024, the adjusted output year-to-date was 64.566 million net tons, with a capacity utilization rate of 76.8%. This marks a 1.60 percent decline from the same year-to-date period in 2023, when production was 65.634 million net tons and capacity utilization was 76.9%.
