SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) recently released Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) statistics showing a significant rise in steel import permit applications in March 2025.
In March of this year, 2.314 million net tons of permit applications were filed, according to data from the Commerce Department. This represents a significant increase of over 5.5% over the 2.193 million net tonnage permit tons recorded the previous month. According to AISI data, the total imports of 2.240 million net tons in February 2025 represented a little rise of nearly 3.3% in comparison to the steel import permit tonnage in March 2025.
The import permit tonnage for completed steel in March of this year was 1.638 million net tons, a slight 0.8% rise from the final import total of 1.625 million net tons in February 2025.
Permits for oil country goods and tin-free steel increased by 38% and 56%, respectively, over the same period in 2024, while permits for reinforcing bars increased by almost 62% over the previous month. Among the goods that have demonstrated significant year-to-date improvements in comparison to the same period in 2024 are sheets and strip, all other metallic coated pipe and tubing, and structural pipe.
In March 2025, Brazil was the offshore country with the highest number of applications for finished steel import permits, followed by Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and Taiwan.
