SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the most recent data available from the U.S. Census Bureau, 2.235 million net tons of steel were imported in February of this year. This represents a significant 27.2% drop in imports compared to the previous month. In addition, 1.623 million net tons of finished steel—a 29.6% decrease—were imported during the month.

Cut length plates were the finished steel product with the largest increase in import quantities, with import volumes rising by about 19% from January of this year. The top offshore suppliers during the month were South Korea, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada.
During the 12-month period from March 2024 to February 2025, imports of steel rose 3.1% overall and 5.4% for finished steel.
According to AISI study, imported finished steel accounted for 22% of the market in the second month of this year. In the first two months of 2025, the import market share for completed steel was 25%.
Tin plates and all other metallic-coated sheets and strips had a notable increase in imports during the March 2024–February 2025 12-month period, with imports rising by 55% and 33%, respectively, compared to the previous 12-month period. Additionally, imports of wire rods and hot-dipped galvanized sheets and strips increased by 28% and 24%, respectively.
