SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly steel shipment data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable surge during the month of May this year compared with the same month a year before. Also, the shipments surged higher marginally over the previous month.
According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.987 million net tons in May 2021. This is significantly higher by 46.2% from the shipments of 5.462 million net tons in the same month in 2020. The shipments during the month recorded modest increase by 1.8% from the prior month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.845 million net tons in April this year.

The report provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products for the initial five-month period of the year. The shipments of cold rolled sheets surged higher by 3% from Jan-May ‘20. The shipments of hot rolled sheet surged marginally higher by 1%, whereas those of hot dipped galvanized sheets too recorded similar 5% year-on-year surge in shipments.
The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 37.938 million net tons during the initial five-month period of the year. This is higher by 7.80% when matched with the corresponding period a year before. The steel shipments by these mills had totalled 35.195 million net tons during Jan-May ’20.
