SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced publication of its 2020 Annual Statistical Report (ASR). It provides comprehensive data on American steel industry in general and specific information on the North American steel industry in particular.
According to the report, the U.S. domestic steel mills shipped a total of 81 million net tons during the previous year, significantly down by 15.8% from the year before that. The U.S raw steel production too recorded notable decline by 17.1% from 2019 to total 80.2 million net tons in 2020. The U.S. total and finished steel imports recorded decline by 21% and 23% respectively over the previous year. This is the third consecutive year of decline for steel imports into the country.

The leading end-use markets for steel products shipped from U.S. mills were construction and automotive industries.
Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO, AISI noted that the steel industry continues to remain as a key focus of the national and international policy. The ASR is an industry standard for reporting on the steel market in the U.S., he added.
The 2020 ASR features extensive coverage of the steel industry, through dozens of charts analyzing steel data over a period of 10 years, along with comprehensive import and export data.
