AISI Applauded New Bill to Clamp Down on Trade Cheating

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) applauded the introduction of new bill aimed at strengthening U.S. trade remedy laws to crack down on trade cheating. The legislation is being authored by Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman.

According to AISI, the “Eliminating Global Market Distortions to Protect American Jobs Act of 2021” legislation is expected to enhance the enforcement tools needed to combat repeat offenders of the U.S. trade remedy laws. The proposed rules will also help in addressing the rising problem of cross-border subsidization which continues to hamper the domestic steel industry in the Americas.

Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of AISI noted that the bill would help when new imports immediately replace the old ones, by creating successive investigations and allowing for quicker relief than under the current system. It also tackles subsidization across borders and fights against unfair subsidies in a much more effective manner, he added. Further, he urged all senators to quickly support the bill.

The provisions of the bill are said to address the statutory timelines for anticircumvention inquiries. It will instil confidence in American public that the government has more tools to ensure a level-playing field for every American worker.
