SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which signals substantial surge in steel import permit applications in the month of March this year.
Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.722 million net tons in March 2021. This is significantly higher by approximately 32.6% when matched with 2.052 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with February 2021 final imports of 1.900 million net tons, the March 2021 steel import permit tonnage was up by 43.2%, AISI data said.

In March, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.822 million net tons, edging higher significantly by 26.9% from the final imports total of 1.436 million net tons in February. Sheets and strip all other metallic coatings reported the largest increase in March permits over the prior month, surging higher by 178%. The import permits for black plates and light shapes bars too were up by 113% and 75% respectively.
In March, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for South Korea. The largest offshore suppliers through the initial three-month period of the year were South Korea, Japan and Germany.
The total and finished steel imports during Jan-Mar ’21 were 7.043 million net tons and 4.497 million net tons respectively.
