SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced proud winner of the 2020 Institute Medal- the Institute’s highest technical award. Alongside, it also declared the two winners of the Finalist Medals.
The winner of the 2020 Institute Medal was the paper titled ‘Separation of Mill Scale from Flume Wastewater Using a Dynamic Separator Toward Zero Wastes in the Steel Hot-Rolling Process’ by Naiyang Ma, Joseph Houser and Marcelo Andrade of ArcelorMittal USA R&D; and, Billi McDowell and Dale Heinz of ArcelorMittal USA Burns Harbor.

One of the Finalist Medals was won by the paper ‘An Optimization Model for Making Alloy Additions During Steelmaking at SSAB Iowa’ by Yufeng Wang, Sunday Abraham, Rick Bodnar, Randy Petty, Gary Brown, Preston Schaaf and Myrissa Maxfield, all of SSAB Americas. The other winner was ‘Numerical and Experimental Studies on Fluid Flow and Microbubble Entrapment During Continuous Casting With a Curved Mold Design’ by Rui Liu, Hongbin Yin, Bruce Forman and Rudolf Moravec of ArcelorMittal USA and, Ran Zhou of Purdue University Northwest.
The technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the iron and steel industry are chosen to be considered for the award, which are later judged by a team of eminent industry experts.
