AISI Announced Latest Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis Data

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the American Iron and Steel Institute's (AISI) most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, the number of steel import permit applications in October 2024 decreased somewhat month over month.

According to data from the Commerce Department, 2.186 million net tons of permit applications were submitted in October of this year. This represents an almost 6.3% decrease from the 2.333 million net tonnage permit tons recorded in the previous month. According to AISI data, the total amount of steel import permits issued in October 2024 was marginally more than 2.3% of the final imports in September, which came to 2.137 million net tons.

Compared to the 1.695 million net tons of final imports in September 2024, the total import permit tonnage for finished steel in October of this year was 1.732 million net tons, a 2% increase.

The largest increase in permits was for reinforcing bars, which increased by more than 61% in October over the previous month. Import permits for heavy structural shapes and hot rolled sheets increased by 28% and 34%, respectively. When compared to the same 10-month period in 2023, the following products have seen notable year-over-year growth: hot-dipped galvanized sheets and strips and all other metallic coated sheets and strips.

Canada was the offshore country with the most finished steel import permit applications in October 2024, followed by Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, and Japan.
