ISRI Seeks Clarity on Draft Standards for Recycled Steel Raw Materials

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) announced that it has forwarded its comments to the Chinese administration on the draft GB/T standards for recycled steel raw materials recently published by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC). The draft standards have been proposed by the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA).

The recycling trade body commended China for developing comprehensive set of standards for imports of recycled steel raw materials. However, it urged the Chinese administration to provide more clarity on the definition of recycling operations. Also, it called for necessary alignment of the Chinese standard codes with the ISRI specification codes.

The ISRI demanded that the draft GB/T standards for recycled steel raw materials be updated by providing a better definition for ‘shredding’. It pointed out that there exists vast difference between ‘shredding’ and ‘crushing’ and that these terms could not be used interchangeably. In addition, it also pointed out the inappropriateness of using the term ‘wool’ to represent the initial stage of processing methods. Instead, ISRI recommended using the term ‘steel scrap’, so as to avoid any confusion.

It must be noted that China is in the process of tightening enforcement of existing regulations on imports of recycled secondary raw materials into the country.
