CPU Processors

What Are CPU Processors?

CPU Processors are the brain of the computer. They contain billions of microscopic transistors and hundreds of gold plated pins. The presence of precious metals such as gold, platinum, silver and palladium make it one of the valuable parts, while scrapping.

Apart from computers, processors are also found in video cards, mobile phones and almost any other electronic devices such as iPods and iPads. However, the size of processors in them is comparatively smaller when matched with those in computers and hence these processors are not much worth scrapping.

Usually processors will have a heat sink attached to them, which may also have a fan. The heat sinks are normally made of aluminum.

CPU Processors Price

The CPU Processors come in different varieties, but are mainly classified into two categories-fibre and ceramic. Fibre CPUs are green in color, thin and usually contain relatively lesser gold. Ceramic CPUs are generally grey in color, thicker and contain more gold. The ceramic types of CPUs are more valuable due to their higher gold content.

Older processors are large in size and contain more gold plating on them. On the other hand, modern day processors are smaller in size and have lesser precious metal content in them. They no longer use solid gold wire bonding technology or gold-plated lids in their packaging. However, gold plating can still be found in connector pins. Most recent CPUs use thinly gold-plated connection pads in place of connector pins, thereby resulting in very less precious metal content.

Where can we sell CPU Processors?

Authorized precious metal recyclers and small refiners are the best places where you can sell scrap CPU Processors. The offered prices are subject to change in market price of precious metals and the actual content of precious metals that can be recovered from them.

  1. The following are some of the scrap yards in the US that accept CPU Processors.
  2. eCycleSecure, Charlotte, North Carolina
  3. Thompson Recycling Co. Inc., Searcy, Arkansas
  4. ERecycle Illinois, Naperville, Illinois
  5. Twin Rivers Electronic Recycling, Keokuk, Iowa

Are you having large quantities of CPU Processors?

CPUs can be sent to a professional recycler of precious metals or to a refiner, so as to ensure safe and professional extraction of gold and other precious metal content on them. Refiners usually pay you, based on the final value of gold content after refining. However, refiners may have minimum weight requirement for accepting CPU scrap, as scrapping can be profitable only if done in a large scale. If you have more quantities of scrap CPU Processors, you will be assured of better prices. Small refiners may accept moderate loads of scrap CPU Processor. Large refiners deal only in bulk.
