Coca-Cola’s Plastic Use to Witness Significant Surge by 2030

Instead, the company is now aiming to have 35-40% recycled material in primary packaging by 2035.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the most recent assessment released by the advocacy group Oceana, Coca-Cola's use of plastic is expected to significantly increase over the coming years. The analysis projects that by 2030, the corporation will use 9.1 billion pounds of plastic. This is almost 20% more than the company's 2023 plastic usage, which was previously disclosed.

Coca-Cola accounted for about 11% of all branded plastic found in the environment, making it the most polluting brand in the world. Greenpeace believes that the corporation currently manufactures more than 130 billion plastic bottles annually. Nestle, Danone, Altria, and PepsiCo come next.

The business had retracted its 2022 commitment to sell at least 25% of its beverages worldwide in glass or plastic bottles that could be reused or returned, or in containers that could be reused. By 2035, the company now wants to have 35–40% of its principal packaging made of recycled materials.

According to Oceana, if Coca-Cola were to reach a 26.4% reusable packaging rate by 2030, it could reduce its current plastic usage. It should be mentioned that in 2023, the rate was 10.2%.

Rough estimates indicate that only around 9% of the approximately 400 million tonnes of plastic garbage produced year worldwide is recycled.
