BIR, EuRIC Strongly Opposed Trade Restrictions on Ferrous Scrap
BIR and EuRIC stated that the proposals are based on incorrect premises and that it require immediate correction.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) and the European Recycling Industries' Confederation (EuRIC) have jointly raised strong resistance against call for trade restrictions on ferrous scrap reached during the recently convened Summit on the Future of the European Steel Industry.
The organisations raised concerns over the intention expressed by representatives of Belgium, Italy, France, Luxembourg, Romania, Slovakia and Spain to secure access to raw materials while retaining steel scrap within the EU. Additionally, the lawmakers had suggested limiting or outright prohibiting exports to third-world nations that do not have comparable manufacturing and environmental regulations to those in Europe.

According to BIR and EuRIC, the proposals need to be corrected right away because they are predicated on false grounds.
Domestic use accounts for over 80% of the steel produced by European nations. Only because the area lacks the capacity to use all of the recycled steel that is available is the remaining 20% exported.
Exporting recycled steel has already become more difficult for metal recyclers as a result of the Waste Shipments Regulation (WSR). The groups pointed out that any further trade restrictions would hurt the environment and recycling sector in Europe. They said that global companies would be forced to switch to more carbon-intensive BOF production if access to European recycled steel were restricted.
