The industry need easy and reasonably priced access to metal in order for the aforementioned investments to succeed. The United States' smelting capacity is insufficient to provide enough raw materials to the aluminum sector. He called on the Trump administration to take the required steps to ensure that American domestic producers have access to the supply of aluminum metal they require.

The Association also called on the administration to keep doing everything it can at the border to stop unjustly traded aluminum from China and other nations.

Trump had recently ordered a 25% import tax on all steel and aluminium entering the US, ending previous exemptions for Canada and the EU.
