AISI Released Most Recent SIMA Imports Data
Hot rolled sheets reported largest increase in December permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 74%.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) recently released Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) statistics showing a significant spike in steel import permit applications in December 2024.
Data from the Commerce Department shows that in December of last year, there were 2.407 million net tons of permit applications. This represents a significant increase of almost 10.8% over the 2.172 million net tonnage permit tons that were recorded in the previous month. According to AISI data, the December 2024 steel import permit tonnage represented a significant increase of more than 16.4% from the final imports of 2.067 million net tons in November 2024.

U.S. Steel Imports Posted Notable Dip in November
The import permit tonnage for finished steel in December of last year was 1.874 million net tons, a 17.7% rise from the final import total of 1.592 million net tons in November 2024.
Compared to the same period in 2023, import permits for hot rolled bars and wire rods increased by 50% and 46%, respectively, while hot rolled sheets saw the largest increase in permits over the previous month, rising by nearly 74%.Products that have had significant year-to-date increases in comparison to the same period in 2023 include sheets and strip all other metallic coated and sheets and strip hot dipped galvanized.
Canada, followed by Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, and Romania, had the most applications for finished steel import permits among offshore nations in December 2024.
