EPRB Published Roadmap for the Future of Plastics Recycling Industry

The roadmap analyses the current state of the EU plastics recycling industry and outlines key recommendations, aimed at boosting plastics recycling in the EU.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A roadmap for the future of the European plastics recycling industry, which is now facing difficulties like a drop in the demand for recycling materials and unfair competition from third countries, was released by EuRIC's European Plastics Recycling Branch (EPRB). These factors, along with the cheap cost of recovered plastics, jeopardize the competitiveness of EU plastics recyclers.

In order to increase plastics recycling in the EU, the roadmap examines the situation of the business today and makes important recommendations. Additionally, it urges quick action to support the conversion of the European plastics recycling sector into a carbon-neutral and circular economy.

Five suggestions are made in the report for a creative and competitive plastics recycling industry. It suggests requiring recycled content targets as a first step to increase the utilization of recycled materials. It also emphasizes how crucial it is to increase the quantity and quality of inputs used in the recycling process.

The other recommendations include providing financial incentives to manufacturers, establishing harmonised EU End-of-Waste (EoW) criteria for plastics and striking the right balance between precautionary measures and responsible risk management.

According to the analysis, Europe's plastic recycling industry's growth rate fell to 6% in 2023.
