SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): EuRIC- the umbrella organization for the recycling industries in Europe announced publication of a factsheet on metal recycling. It highlights the significance of ferrous and nonferrous metal recycling and their environmental and economic benefits.
The brochure emphasized on teh fact that metals can be recycled indefinitely. At the end of their life, products made of metals can be re-processed and re-introduced into the production process for making new metals. This leads to significant reduction in amount of waste that goes to landfill. Also, it minimizes the consumption of primary raw materials.

EuRIC noted that almost 90% of end-of-life stainless steel is currently collected and recycled into new products. Nearly 600 million tonnes of steel scrap were being used in production of new steel in 2017. Almost 36% of the global crude steel were produced from secondary raw materials during that year.
The use of steel scrap in production process reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 58%. In 2018, 157 million tonnes of carbon dioxide were saved in the EU by recycling 94 million tonnes of scrap. Further, use of scrap steel reduces air and water pollution by 86% and 76% respectively. Further, it also results in 40% water savings.
