Top Ten E-Waste Generating Countries in Africa

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): For many years, managing e-waste has been a major concern for nations all over the African continent. In addition to producing massive amounts of their own electronic garbage, the nations in the region frequently serve as disposal sites for electronic waste from western nations.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Institute of Training and Research (UNITAR) released the Global E-Waste Monitor 2024 report, which states that the volume of electronic garbage generated worldwide is expected to increase five times more quickly than the current rate of e-waste recycling. The majority of the world's growing e-waste is still coming from African nations.

According to the survey, Egypt produces almost 690 kilos of e-waste annually, more than any other country. South Africa and Nigeria come in second and third, respectively, with 530 and 500 kilograms. Along with their respective e-waste creation (in kilos), the other nations that made the top ten list are Algeria (330), Morocco (180), Angola (150), Kenya (88), Ethiopia (88), Ghana (72), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (56).

A few nations have put in place the extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy and other required laws to deal with the region's escalating e-waste problem. The goal of these programs is to lessen the effects that e-waste has on the continent.
