AISI Declared Latest Steel Import Permits Data

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.304 million net tons in September this year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most current Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) statistics, released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), shows a slight month-over-month increase in the number of applications for steel import permits in September 2024.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.304 million net tons in September this year. When compared to the 2.232 million net tonnage permit tons registered in the previous month, this is somewhat higher by almost 3.2%. The tonnage of steel import permits issued in September 2024 was slightly less than 2.9% of August 2024's final imports, which totaled 2.374 million net tons, according to AISI data.

AISI Statistics Point to Dip in August Steel Imports

The overall import permit tonnage for finished steel in September of this year was 1.798 million net tons, which is 2% less than the 1.833 million net tons of final imports in August 2024.

Permits for tin-free steel saw the biggest rise in September compared to the previous month, rising by over 62%. There was a 28% and 21% increase in import licenses for line pipes and hot rolled bars, respectively. Products that have had significant year-over-year growth as compared to the same nine-month period in 2023 include sheets and strip all other metallic coated and sheets and strip hot dipped galvanized.

In September 2024, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada, followed by Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Vietnam.
