U.S. Raw Steel Output Witnessed Downward Momentum in Late September

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded modest decline by 2.70% during the week ending on September 28, 2024, said the most recent weekly domestic production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). This is upon comparison with the corresponding week a year before.

The U.S. weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.646 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate stood at 74.1%. It must be noted that the production had totalled 1.691 million NT at a marginally higher capacity utilization rate of 74.4% during the corresponding week a year before.

Also, the weekly crude steel production recorded decline by 3.60% when compared with the previous week. The production was 1.707 million NT during the previous week ending September 21, 2024, with a capability utilization rate of 76.9%.

The leading producer was the Southern region, with an output of 710,000 net tons. The production by Great Lakes region totalled 576,000 net tons during the week. The production by other regions (in thousand net tons) is as follows: North East-116, Midwest-197 and Western-47.

The adjusted year-to-date production totalled 66.212 million net tons through September 28, 2024, at a capability utilization rate of 76.7%. This is down by 1.7% upon comparison with the production of 67.325 million net tons and the capacity utilization rate of 76.9% in the corresponding year-to-date period in 2023.
