AISI Statistics Point to Dip in August Steel Imports

The largest offshore suppliers during the month were Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Japan.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. Census Bureau's most recent statistics for the month of August of this year show that total steel imports were 2.367 million net tons. This is a little decrease of 9.4% from the imports in the previous month. In addition, the amount of finished steel imported decreased by 9.4% on a monthly basis to 1.828 million net tons.

Blooms, billets, and slabs were the finished steel product whose import quantities increased by the greatest percentage in August of this year—nearly 34% over the previous month. The imports of oil country goods also were up by 34%. Additionally, imports of sheets and all other metallic coated items had a 32% increase from July 2023 to this month. The largest offshore suppliers during the month were Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Japan.

The 12-month period from September 2023 to August 2024 saw increases of 0.4% and 2.2% in total and completed steel imports, respectively. The finished steel import market share was estimated at 21% in August, noted AISI.

When comparing the 12-month period from September 2023 to August 2024 to the preceding 12-month period, the products with notable year-to-date increases were sheets and strip all other metallic coated and sheets and strip hot dipped galvanized, whose imports increased by 48% and 28%, respectively. Also, wire rod imports increased by 22%.
