worldsteel Declared Top 10 Steel Producers in May 2024

The Japanese output witnessed decline by 6.3% during the month of May this year to total 7.2 Mt.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the month of May this year. Among the countries in the list, China, India, Turkey and Iran recorded year-on-year surge in production, while all the remaining six countries witnessed dip in production.

China topped the list, with the country’s output recording notable surge by 2.7% over the same month a year before. The country’s crude steel output totalled around 92.9 Mt during the month.

India’s estimated output, at 12.2 Mt, recorded significant surge by 3.5% over May last year. The Japanese output witnessed decline by 6.3% during the month of May this year to total 7.2 Mt.

The U.S. produced 6.9 Mt of steel, a tad lower by 1.5% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 6.3 Mt, down by 0.9% year-on-year. The South Korean crude steel production witnessed notable decline by 10.9% to 5.2 Mt. Meantime, Germany recorded 1.9% year-on-year dip in production to 3.2 Mt.

The eighth largest producer was Turkey, whose output surged higher by 11.6% total 3.2 Mt. It recorded the largest production jump in May 2024. Iran’s output totalled 3.3 Mt, higher by 2.1% year-on-year. Meantime, Brazil’s output saw decline by 7.4% year-on-year to 2.6 Mt, worldsteel data said.
