Century Aluminum to Receive U.S. Funding to Build New Green Aluminum Smelter
The company’s Green Aluminum Smelter Project is one among 33 projects selected from across more than 20 different states to receive the funding.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Chicago, Illinois-headquartered Century Aluminum Company has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations to receive funding of $500 million to build a new aluminum smelter. The company’s Green Aluminum Smelter Project is one among 33 projects selected from across more than 20 different states to receive the funding.
The funding represents a major capital injection for the U.S. primary aluminum industry, which in turn will strengthen domestic supply chains for materials critical for the green energy transition. The aid will help Century Aluminum build the first new primary aluminum smelter in the U.S. in 45 years. The proposed smelter is expected to double the size of the current U.S. primary aluminum industry, the company press release noted.
Commenting on the development, Jesse Gary, CEO said that he is extremely proud that the DOE has selected the company’s green aluminum smelter project to receive such significant support and that the company is excited to move this transformational project forward. Apart from providing a tremendous win for the domestic primary aluminum industry, the project targets to build a more sustainable future for generations to come, Gary added.
The smelter, to be built at a site within the Ohio/Mississippi River basins, is expected to create over 1,000 full-time unionized jobs and nearly 5,500 construction jobs.
