The study classified 192 countries across the globe into six categories, based on various characteristics such as waste management and recycling infrastructure, legislative framework and operational models- Undeveloped Systems, Incipient Systems, Developing Systems, Functional, Largely Unregulated Systems, Advanced Systems with Challenges and Developed Performing Systems.
The study found that over 60% of all countries in the world have underdeveloped or incipient waste systems. These countries were found to recycle only less than 8% of the total plastic waste generated, primarily due to lack of basic waste management infrastructure and waste collection strategies. According to the study, the countries which fall in these two categories of waste system have the biggest opportunity to end plastic waste leakage into the environment.
AEPW highlighted the importance of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in boosting overall recycling rates.
