SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa- the European leader in sustainable packaging solutions extended full support to the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR) - the key legislation passed by the EU parliament as part of its commitment to a circular economy model.

It must be noted that MEPs had passed the legislation with amendments in a plenary vote, which saw 426 votes in favour, 125 against and 74 abstentions. The press release by Smurfit Kappa noted that the European cardboard industry has already had the best recycling system of all packaging materials. The EU recycles approximately 90% of the estimated 32 million tonnes per year production. The European cardboard industry has been a frontrunner in delivering Europe’s green transition.

The EU Parliament has made a historical decision on a landmark legislation that is expected to lead Europe towards a circular economy, said Saverio Mayer, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Europe. This is a recognition of the fact that reuse and recycling of packaging are complementary, it noted.
