BlueScope Unveiled Master Plan to Develop Surplus Land at Port Kembla Steelworks
It aims to retain over 60% of the transformed site as green and blue space and open parklands.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): BlueScope has unveiled a 100-year master plan to develop approximately 200 hectares of non-steelmaking surplus land adjacent to Port Kembla Steelworks. The plan is the outcome of nearly 18 months of intensive research, analysis and community engagement.
As per the master plan, the excess landholdings next door to the steelmaking plant will be transformed into a next-generation multi-industrial precinct, having the potential to create around 30,000 jobs in various industries including clean energy and defence. Mark Vassella, Managing Director and CEO of the company termed it as one of the most significant land transformation and job creation opportunities in Australia.

The master plan was developed in partnership with Denmark’s Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), a global leader in urban design and architecture of industrial sites. It aims to retain over 60% of the transformed site as green and blue space and open parklands.
According to preliminary economic modelling by Deloitte, the master plan could generate additional 20,000 jobs and contribute up to $5 billion per annum to the Gross Regional Product (GRP).
BlueScope announced that it expects continued collaboration of stakeholders, community and government bodies to bring the transformative vision into life.
