AISI Declared October SIMA Imports Data

When compared with September 2023 final imports of 2.189 million net tons, the October 2023 steel import permit tonnage was down by almost 3%, AISI data said.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates notable decline in steel import permit applications during the month of October 2023.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.123 million net tons in October this year. This is significantly lower by around 8.5% when matched with 2.319 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with September 2023 final imports of 2.189 million net tons, the October 2023 steel import permit tonnage was down by almost 3%, AISI data said.

In October this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.757 million net tons, considerably higher by 11.2% from the final imports total of 1.580 million net tons in September this year.

Standard rails reported largest increase in October permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 11,752%. The import permits for tin plates and wire rods too were up by 92% and 70% respectively. The products with notable year-to-date increases compared with the corresponding eight-month period in 2022 include standard rails and cut length plates.

In October 2023, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada. The largest offshore suppliers through the initial eight months of the current year were Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
